THE ASBURY PARK PRESS wrote an article critical of Governor Jon Corzine's financial restructuring plan. And to illustrate the article, the Press created a photo illustration of Corzine peddling items like a common street hood.
Corzine is upset.
"To put it mildly, he was not a happy camper," a Corzine administration official told the New York Times on the condition on anonymity.
His chief of staff wrote a letter to the editor stating: While working with photo editing software may be a useful tool for assembling gag photos or correcting minor imperfections. Using it to manipulate the governor — any governor — into a sinister character is not what we would expect from a responsible media organization.
Did the paper do anything wrong? Didn't they just see an injustice and try to make the public recognize it? Aren't they monitoring government?
Or did they go too far? Was it wrong to fabricate an image?
Would people have read the story if the illustration had not been so eye-catching?

I don't see anything wrong with it. A newspaper has the right to opinionated pieces. The picture is like a political cartoon. It was not manipulated because it isn't misleading people in any way. It's clear to see that the picture is metaphoric and not literal. It is a "gag photo."
I agree with doanh. Regardless of whether or not the image was there, I think the number of readers would have been the same. Sure, the image makes people look at the article to see what it could be about. But the story itself is where the credibility and interest lies.
I am from Monmouth County New Jersey. The Asbury Park Press is my hometown paper. Its awesome to see they are sort of trying new things. This is the first time I can recall seeing them doing something so controversial to get readers attention. Good for them! The picture is clearly a "gag" photo so I really don't see a problem. Unless, people are silly enough to believe this photo of Corzine is real somehow? And that would just be upsetting.
a governor leading a state with a 7 billion dollar debt needs to keep his mouth shut and take what ever publicity he gets. Its a little immature by the APP but its interesting.
