KANYE WEST JUMPED ON stage during the MTV Video Awards and interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for best female artist video. West believed the award should have gone to Beyonce.
Barack Obama commented on the event. But is it news?
UPDATE: More info about Obama's calling Kanye a jackass - it was tweeted by an ABC News reporter who was in front of the president while the president was being miked for an interview.

It would depend on the outlet- It wouldn't be appropriate for the NY Times to run a front page article on it, but they'd get by with an article in the arts and entertainment section.
OK THIS IS ACTUALLY BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This story is absolutely news. But no because Kanye is a jackass, or even because he ruined Taylor Swift's acceptance speech. The story here is that President Obama made the remarks off the record during the process of an interview with a long time White House reporter. That reporter then turned around and tweeted the off the record statement. With the evolution of journalism into a 24/7 cycle, journalists are constantly searching for a new story to report on, and this has led to a new definition of off the record. What was once considered a conversation that never happened has become something of a tactic to trick public figures into saying something they might not say while they are on the record. Many reporters look for off the record comments to get a better understanding of who or what they are reporting on or to get advance information. Moran's decision to tweet the President's off the record comment shows that the line between on and off the record is quickly blurring. This could have far reaching affects on other reporters covering the White House. The Obama administration has promised a new level of transparency, especially after the Bush administration, but I am sure this is not what they had in mind.
Yes, this is entertainment news and Taylor Swift deserves this award!!!
Wait a second ... some of you commented during class time. That means you either weren't in class or you were on your computer during class.
Busted.

We are engaging in the blog while you are talking about it.
ABSOLUTELY news. I don't even have an explanation. It just is.
Isn't it a journalists job to report what happens in society? I think this kind of event and what the president said is definitely news. It may not be important but it was an event that happened and he is our president and the public should know what's going on. But I also agree with the comment way up above, if what Obama said was suppose to be off the record, then i don't think it should have been printed.
Kanye West is a jerk off, but does it directly effect any of us? No. It's not news. Just entertainment.
Neither is an off-the-record comment made by the President who, in fact, is a person, and can think someone else is a jackass. The reporter who Tweeted it should be fired. It was a disgusting and low move that may possibly turn into something bigger than what it really is: Barrack Obama said out loud what all of us were thinking (or maybe even exclaimed ourselves).
You generally dont fire a reporter of Terry Moran's status for a mistake, especially one that blew over in just a day or two.
It's because of emphasis on "news" like this that most people can't name their state rep. or senator. Can anyone on here his/hers? (Without Google) Mine are Jennifer Mann and Pat Brown, respectively.
OOO,big deal. Obama called Kanye West a jackass. That is not news, although it is cool to know that he uses such foul language {sarcastic voice}. This is just a silly reporter turning nothing into something.
And on Kanye and the VMAS.. he only said what many of us were thinking so i dont see what all the commotion is about. And i don't know why everyone is so surprised by the way he acted. We all know that he is such a DIVO!!! He always has something to say, this is not his first time pulling a stunt like this. So people, please get over it.
(and i also feel that Taylor Swift didn't deserve this award either...i think either pink or katy perry should have one)
I really don't understand how news, such as the Kanye v Taylor Swift / Obama v Kanye has any affect on whether or not people are aware of who their representatives are.
Mine are Daylin Leach and Greg Vitali.
And your Representative and Senator are only 2 of the people that represent you in government. You also have 2 US Senators, a Congressman, a Governor, Attorney General, Auditor General... the list goes on, not to mention there is the President, Vice President, Cabinet, US Senate and US House leadership... again the list goes on.
Much of the news we consume is voluntary, and people choose to view this material. It is a shame that most people don't choose to educate themselves on matters that really are more important, but again that doesn't make the other stuff not news.
Thats because they make the other stuff sound so boring. They write and talk about politics in such a monotone that many people just stop caring. If they made politics a more exciting or delivered the news in a way that is going to catch peoples' attention then maybe more people will like that.
its really not important at all but it is something people will want to read about regardless of whether they even like kanye or tswift
I think that it's not really important news...but it's incredible to me how fast the flow of unimportant information can flow within our generation thanks to various forms of media... its a pretty powerful thing...just imagine if all our facebooks statuses were about an important social issue instead of Kanye being arrogant and out of line, which isn't really news to anyone...
It's definitely news when the president calls one American out of 39394828357 a jackass especially. when he's famous & especially when he's Kanye West. Lol.
@ Sydney -
Not knowing even your two state senators is a big deal. While our news is plagued by trash entertainment like this, people are too ignorant to know who representing them and instead focus on Kanye v. Taylor, or Obama saying what everyone in the US knew as soon as West jumped on stage.
Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, Jr., by the way. And to be honest, if it weren't for Citizenship in the Nation merit badge, I wouldn't know them.
This isn't really news because Obama wasn't the only person that made a comment when Kanye went on stage while Taylor Swift was making her acceptance speech. Obama was in his home privately when he called Kanye a jackass. And to tell u the truth,Obama wasn't the only one who thinks that Kanye did a stupid move. Maybe next time Kanye will watch what he does because he probably didn't realize that this was going to turn out like this.
This is news and it is definitley something the public eats up because these people are famous and we always have to know what is going on with famous people. I agree with some of the other comments that this is not front page NY Times material but it is something that is an easy seller for news companies. This type of story grabs people's attention and it draws them in so if the newspapers were smart and wanted an easy sell they would publish this story.
Is it news that the president cursed?
You know, is it a story that our nation's leader used profanity?

This is absolutely news, when two such engaging personalities at opposite ends of the celebrity spectrum clash over a particular event, it's the closest thing to news, it's something that everyone wants to hear more and more about. When President Barack Obama won over many celebs, due to his call for change in Washington, including Kanye West. It was West who ignited the flame of celebs across the country in Obama's support, so all in all this comment is absolutely shocking to me. This comment once again shows the President will comment on whatever he pleases whenever he wants. Right or wrong, Obama may lose support, which at this particular time is the last thing that he wants to do in the midst of his health care reform.

Obama calling Kanye a jackass? This is definitely news. One, Obama is the President and anything that he says or does is always closely monitored. Two, Obama said this "off-the record" and was Twittered, sparking national attention. Hence, the people are interested and want to know more about it, making it news.
Too much alcohol on the red carpet led to foolish behavior on the stage!!!!
@Aleks Molnar (....)
So your blaming the MEDIA because people aren't properly educated?
Why can't have both, the entertainment "trash" (that hey, A LOT of people are interested in) and the news that people should know. It's not the media's fault that people don't know the names of the senators. The information is THERE, but nobody's really interested. Sorry.
FELICIA TOPSALE SAYS........
I heard about it on a late night talk show and thought it was a spoof at the time. I had no idea that it was really true. I liked hearing Pres. Obama caurse on TV. I think it made him more real and honest. He isn't perfect. I had no idea he cursed although I'm not surprised. I does make me question the integrity of the journalist who recorded what he said because the comment was suppose to be "off the record".
All I can say about it is I was never a big fan of Taylor Swift but she's handled the situation beautifully. Just look at her interview on The View.

The girl has certainly earned points in my book. By the way, take careful notice of the fact that when she was interviewed on Tuesday, Kanye West had made no actual attempt to apologize to her on the phone or in person. What a flipping jackass. And you as for the president's calling him such I don't think it was wrong for the reporter to tweet about the president's comment. There is even recorded audio available on the Associated Press's youtube channel (meaning it's not just something the reporter tweeted). Listen to it now:

That's all I can say.
I think that this is definitely news. He is the President of the United States and it interests millions of people all over the country because of the many fans of Taylor Swift that may agree. It should not be a headline on the NY Times, like people have said before, but everyone likes to know about celebrities and what is being said etc. This is definitely something that people want to hear.
Well to start off, Kanye West is a complete disgrace. His actions towards Taylor Swift were completely juvenile and disrespectful. This is news, but definitely not front page. Definitely a huge story though, especially because of President Obama's comment.
I have to agree with Obama for calling him a jackass. I dont know what he was on that night, but I lost a lot of respect for Kanye West after seeing that. It was good to see Beyonce show some class though.
I think that Barack Obama has the right to and opinion, I don't think it should have been published only because, him calling west a jackass isn't going to really affect society but that healthcare bill is!
I've been on the edge of my seat about this. Yeah, not really.
A lot of media outlets are like the drug trade. You could kill cartel heads all day long but as long as there are people craving a fix it will never end.
Kanye got what he wanted--people are talking about him now and will probably spoof the situation in the following months. They already mentioned it during the Emmys last night when Neil Patrick Harris said, at the beginning of the show, "I hope Kanye West likes 30 Rock."
Secondly, if what Jon Gosselin has to say is considered news, then what the President has to say about a situation definitely it. I don't really see "jackass" as profanity, anyway. I mean, it was in Shrek!!
hahahaha thats such an epic picture. is it news that obama called him a jackass?
no
is it news that the president drank...budweiser (i think)?
no
but is it news because a nation of people treat it as such and glorify it in media outlets?
yes
President Obama had a feeling and a response! We are all at a loss when something as human as having a honest response is denied. Also, we are mislead when these things overshadow events of greater importance. It's sad when the president is relegated to the part of MACHINE, despite his role as the Representitive of an entire country of feeling and thinking human being. Though at times that ois debatable. Oh the irony!
I believe it is news. Kanye is a celebrity and people want to know about him. He is a icon and when he does something wrong it should be published. I do not believe it is valuable news (news we need to know in order to live our live), but in todays society it is considered news.
In my opinion, this is news. Entertainment news to be exact. Alot of people like to know what celebrities are doing. It sells. Plus, Obama commented on it...definitely newsworthy. Oh and Kanye is a douche.
