Should the Anchor Shoot Hoops with the Globetrotters?

A Chicago morning news anchor was invited to play on the court with the Harlem Globetrotters when the team visited that region.

The anchor posted some random video on YouTube, which the station then ran on air. As the video rolled, his colleagues made fun of him.

This brings about two questions:

• Would you join the fun on the court?

Remember, this is clearly a promotional stunt - the team allowed the anchor to play because the team knew they would get free publicity from it. But it's the Globetrotters! It's just a silly event, no?

• Should the station have aired the video?

On one hand, it seems like good marketing, right? Make your anchor look like a regular guy, build his brand and all. On the other hand, he's supposed to be a journalist, no? He's supposed to be reporting the news, not being the news, right?

What do you think?

I don't have a problem with the news anchor participating in the Globetrotters game. I see it as the anchor trying to show that he is an everyday person who has interests like his viewers.

Personally, I would not have aired the video. It is taking up time that could have been used covering something that was actually newsworthy, or important. If there was segment in which the anchors talked about what they did during the past week, then I would have aired the video.

I 100% agree with Jonathan Richman to the tee. Journalism is changing with the use of of cellphones and social media now. People want to know more and feel more connected to the people they watch.

In my opinion, the anchor may choose a wrong way to market him or his show. I think the journalist seems like a delivery man who delivers the news. We should focus on reporting rather than others. At the same time, the audience should believe products we diverted are real and reliable. When the journalist has funny stories like the Chicago has, people may transfer their interest on the deliveryman, not the goods. The worse thing is, they might not trust what the anchor say because of his unsuccessful show in other areas. It is true that journalists need to be trusted. Therefore, next time the anchor wants to market his show, choose some activities which can show his reliable.
