Now everybody's REALLY starting to feel bad for McNabb getting picked on by the darned press... and obviously he'd feel a lot better about himself if her were of Japanese descent, or at least half-Japanese. Hmmm... which would you rather be: A millionaire athlete or poor underpaid journalist?!
I thought Duce was kinda cute back when he played on Phialadelphia, but after reading how he lost it like he did opens my eyes a bit. I'm always wondering who I'll meet in journalism that will be a complete jerk or some sound bite that is out of this world. Like the Allen Iverson "Practice? Practice?"
george, i love the eagles more than life itself, but i gotta say, duce is a dick. there is no better way to put it. i wish you would have kicked his already IR ass. but i dont think that gives you a right to hate the team. sure, hate duce, hate HC, hate andy (because he is fat and a terrible game day coach), but the team? what about people like dawkins and westbrook, both of whom i had the chance to meet this summer and spend time with?
you are 100% right. however, calling someone fat is different from making a remark about someones ethnic backround. and for the record, i had the chance to interview andy this summer. he is a very nice guy, but man can he eat a cheeseburger faster than anyone i have ever met.
Duce Staley held a press conference where he told the press about his injury and his being denied to do what he loves as a (partial) result of slipping in his home staduim's hallways. While it was very uncool for Staley to make ethnically charged comments, it is understandable, to me, that Staley was upset about a photographerattempting to caputre his dejection in the locker room. If a photo was so imperative it could have been taken while Duce was walking up to or leaving the podium. He is a professional athlete but he's a person, too. He made a mistake in his use of words but the hostility seems justified.
And to add to my earlier comments it seems a little petty to enjoy and relish in other people's misery. The fact is, the athletes really don't take losing as hard as the fans, because most fans don't have tubs full of money to console themselves in. Really, it's just enjoying the misery of the people around you, which seems somewhat sick.
Pro athletes don't take losses hard? Their money consoles them?
Maybe we should all quit rooting for those pro teams then.
Maybe we should all think about the amateurs who perform for the love of the game. Maybe we should all quit rooting for the Eagles, Giants, Cowboys, whoever. Maybe should focus on the only true team that performs for the sake of their fans:
I am very annoyed by this article by the teach. As a diehard Philadelphia sports fan I live and die with all of our sports teams, especially the Eagles. I hate when people take joy in people, like me who love this team to death, being saddened by yet another season without a Super Bowl. I very well remember the hours and days after Super Bowl XXXIX, just like the other 3 NFC title losses, I was miserable. To hear someone take joy in pain like mine angers me, it angers me just as George was angered by Duce Staley calling him "Bruce Lee." I see where George is upset, Duce had no right to call him that, but to go around with a shit-eating grin on your face interviewing people who have watched this team for years, who live for this team, who probably felt like they just had their hearts ripped out is wrong. I'm not asking him to root for the team but have some respect for the people who do love this team, who stick with this team through thick and thin even though they continually to stab us in the heart.
Good for you, Kevin. If you ever disagree with me (or anyone for that matter), speak your mind. Living in a society means we should all have the ability to have a reasonable conversation.
I hear what you're saying and it all makes sense. I just hold a grudge, that's all. Nothing personal.
I never liked the Eagles. Still don't. This is just icing on the cake. Andy Reid, come on back. You don't need this kind of team! Whiney QB's, Angry Fans, what else could you want?
I read the comment above by Kevin and I have to disagree. You get to choose who you root for. Whatever skin color you are, your family, your heritage, you did not get to choose that. You may feel that being an Eagles fan is directly tied into your sense of being, and to some extent it it, but when the Eagles lose, it is not a personal affront to you as a human being. Personally, I fuckin' hate football. I don't get it and I don't want to. But, as a sociology major, I understand the merits behind activities that unite people as a collective and I encourage them for those merits alone. So, I am not saying that because I hate football that your defensiveness is wrong, but I disagree with your ignorance in comapring our professor expelling his views and your feeling hurt and what initially happened between him and Staley.
A) How am I ignorant in expressing my ideas? Calling someone else ignorant just because you disagree with them comes across as snotty.
B) I said I disagreed with Geo going around enjoying people being upset about the Eagles losing, not his dislike for the team. I clearly stated I felt that he had every right to dislike the team for how he was mistreated. You shouldn't take your dislike for the team out on the fans who support them. He should be happy if the Eagles lose, and he should be happy that Duce Staley isn't even in the NFL anymore. Just don't take pleasure in people who love the team getting upset when said team loses.

I hate the Eagles too. I'm just waiting for someone to beat me up after class now.
I'm not an Eagles fan either. I am a Dallas fan which makes it even worse. I would just like to say that Dallas is 4-0!!!!
BLATANT ASS KISSING
That article was amazing. He reminds me of every football jock at my high school.

Cool now I have another reason to hate the bEagles.
This is one of the reason's why you are one of my favorite teachers at Temple U.... and that's saying a lot -- I'm a SENIOR.

I'm not really a big fan of the Eagles, but I like to get all wound up when family comes over and watches the game---
I'm more of a superbowl fan.

Wait, so all football players aren't like Marky Mark in Invincible!?

i wore my chicago bears hoodie to the louis j. esposito dining court (aka j&h) tonight and i'm surprised i wasn't shanked. eagles fans scare me.
by the way, george, you're fantastic.
Geo, I completely agree. I hate football & I hate the Eagles. How many days until Spring training?!
