YOUR CLASSMATE, Morgan Zalot, was fired up after Jonathan Valania said that it was pointless to be a journalism major. So she interviewed media folk all around town and wrote about their opinions of the Phawker editor's comments.
“The bloggers are going to put themselves out of business eventually, and maybe soon, if they don’t get their work more rooted in actual honest reporting,” says Temple grad Zack Stalberg, the former longtime editor of the Philadelphia Daily News. “Right now traditional journalism is under assault. But in time people will realize it’s got value.”
The story is published in the Philly Weekly that hits the street today.
She also quotes Joey Sweeney, editor of Philebrity, one of Phawker's primary competitors:
“The new media conceit very often is this rash thing of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. People like the sort of gospel Jonathan is preaching because it compensates for whatever insecurities they might have about their own credentials.”
Check out the Philebrity site because on Thursday, Sweeney will visit our class. He'll talk about the wonderful world of new media, and the vast world of possibilities.
As a side note, you should all be trying to get stuff published. Do an internship, write for the Temple News, get involved with campus publications, freelance, whatever. If you are lost, confused, uncertain about how to pitch stories or anything else, grab me.

Are you going to be at the TABJ meeting later on today?
That's me. I'll be there.

Wow, congratulations! Phawker also put a little blurb up on their blog about this, I think. I like this story and I will definitely be reading it.
That's so neat!
CONGRATZ MORGAN! That article was amazing. Very well written and researched. I'm glad this issue is causing a stir and getting so much attention. Maybe this will get other college students motivated to use their voice about other issues.
Two points for TU Journalism majors! WOO!

Thanks so much guys!
