Say It Ain't So, Larry!

FROM THE FRONT page of the Sunday Inquirer:

The FBI has launched a criminal investigation of CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte - searching his home and confiscating his personal computer - to determine whether he illegally accessed the Yahoo e-mail account of former colleague Alycia Lane.

Larry didn't work the show on Friday. Alycia Lane was fired after she was arrested in New York, charged with assaulting a police officer. Most of the charges against Lane were eventually dropped.

MONDAY 6/2 UPDATE: CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte opened former colleague Alycia Lane's private e-mail account hundreds of times over many months, sources told The Inquirer yesterday, and the FBI is investigating whether he passed on gossip about Lane to the media.

that's pretty crazy, but i can honestly say I;m not very suprised. When Larry visited in class he struck me as being a little suspicious, but I couldn't tell at the time if that was his television persona talking. As it turns out, Larry Mendte may be a criminal.

I guess it's illegal and everything.. but I also feel like this e-mail searching thing is being blown way out of proportion. The only reason this is such a high-profile case is because of his name and career. If in fact they do find him guilty of giving info to the media about Alycia Lane then I will be more willing to accept it, but at this point I feel like they are fishing for it, and in turn potentially ruining Larry Mendte's career. I may not be the biggest fan of him, but seizing his personal computer and searching his home for possibly reading e-mails, when alycia lane says she doesn't even know about it? Come on...If she had no idea then how do the feds know? This just sounds ridiculous to me.

Wow. This is interesting. I say either Alycia Lane wanted to get her name back into the news, and play the victim. Or Larry Mendte is a very shady guy who wanted to make his former co-worker look even worse in order to boost his appeal.

Maybe if he would have checked his account more often, he wouldn't have skipped out on us that first time! Oh Larry!

This is the first time I have ever posted anything on a blog or a website. (aka technology is the bane of my existence)... but I'm getting there... I actually had an interesting personal experience with Larry Mendte before any speculation occurred... so I thought my experience might hold for an interesting discussion. Last May I was cordially invited to a fundraiser ball for the Cardiovascular Institute of Philadelphia... no I'm not that amazingly special. My boyfriend's mother is a cardiologist. Anyway, at the fundraiser, Larry Mendte made a guest appearance and I had the "opportunity" to meet him. I told him I was wanting to go to Temple to major in Broadcast Journalism and what a passion I had for the business. In return, Mr. Mendte gave me his email address and told me that I was more than welcome to come down to the station whenever I wanted to view the set and to see what happens behind the camera. He told me to keep in touch with him via email and let him know when I had the available time to meet him at CBS3. Obviously, I was ecstatic to hear that I would be given such an AMAZING opportunity... After that I continued to communicate with Mr. Mendte through e-mail, however, it did seem to me at many instances, that the idea of someone as "professional" as he was, shouldn't communicate so easily with a random 18 year old girl. Especially through email!! In the end, I was never able to make it down to the station for personal reasons, however, looking back now, I'm so happy I never did!!! Now all of the drama spiraling around about him and Alycia Lane really freaks me out. The whole incident now, instead of being a positive one, just gives my parents another reason to scold me on being more aware of the people I meet... even if the person is a well known news anchor who works for one of the top media networks in the Philadelphia region...
