I think it could be considered news, but is it news worthy? I hate to use such a common saying, but with everything else that is going on right, is this a story that is necessary to report on? It's not magical, it's just balanced.
Fantastic. 2:34 seconds of my life wasted. This isn't any more noteworthy than getting a quarter to stand on it's side, or a lucky bounce into a basketball net.
This is sheer entertainment, and does not belong even in the weakest stretch for a local channel's human interest segment.
On the other hand, at least I have an idea of something to aim for in my dorm when boredom strikes. Thank you Chrisite Berdet, Bryan Henry, and WSFA 12.
This must have been the slowest news day ever in that Alabama county. Really, is nothing going on in the world that is more interesting than a broom standing on end? Did anybody at the local bowling alley throw a 300? It's really a shame that the station would choose to put this piece in there, for I doubt anybody cares about whether or not a broom can stand on it's end. If I were watching this when it came on the TV, I know for sure I would be switching channels immediately. This offers absolutely no useful information for any viewer.
The real news story here is that it was an obscenely slow news day in Montgomery, AL and one unfortunate reporter had to go out and find a feature story. This story however, is hardly newsworthy and should not have made the broadcast.
Sure it's strange and out there but I wouldn't consider this news. It's more like a a filler story to occupy time and space on their network because the journalists couldn't come through with their jobs.
Just because a bunch of people think that its interesting and like to come look at it does not mean that it needs to be on a news program. Maybe an entertainment show or something but they definitely just pulled a random story out to fill some time. It could easily just be balancing, or the people who own the store could have rigged it. Definitely not news worthy.
Sure, it's "news." Anything that happens is news. And the broom standing may be the most exciting thing in this town. But, in the grand scheme of things, does it matter? Probably not. Compared to what's going on in the rest of the world, who cares about a broom?
Personally, I think it's a waste of airtime that could be used to cover stories of much greater importance, if not locally, then nationally or internationally.
@Geo: I don't think all news has to be serious, but all news reported on TV should at least be important. There's only 30 or 60 minutes to cover all the news of the day (on local TV stations anyway). The Daily Show, for example, is not a "serious" news source, yet the stories discussed on the show lean towards very important. Important news as entertainment.
I believe this could be a news story; like people have posted, news does not always have to be "bad." As we learned in class, news stations (and other media outputs) find information and stories to target an audience. A large number of people in the town became interested, or maybe "infatuated" is a better word, with the broom phenomenon. Whomever contacted the news station or discovered this story had motive to believe a larger audience would be curious as well. To conclude: it was an "okay" story but definitely too much time and attention was alotted.
I think that is definitely news. It's exciting and something that you do not see everyday. It might not have importance to everyone in the country, but to the people in that town it does.
The broom is news it's stupid and does not concern my life at all but I'm still curious as to how it's standing. I think that it is news because news falls under many categories: funny, serious, ironic, stupid, horrific, alarming, good, bad, entertaining, etc. The broom does not concern my life at all but then again neither does Micheal Vick yet the news never stopped talking about him.
FELICIA TOPSALE SAYS............I'm sorry. The story is cute but I'd rather watch the weather report. It could be interesting if I had a stressful day and needed a good laugh.

I'm doubtful that this is any manifestation of the holy spirit...Looks to me as if she just has a perfectly balanced broom

Is this news.....
The short answer is no- not even by Alabama standards.
That being said, it must be nice to be so easily entertained.

Does all news have to be serious?
If hundreds of people walked by to gawk, doesn't that make it seem like people are curious?
Won't anybody take the side of the broom lovers?
